Tier 1 Overview

Library instruction consists of 1 hour of class time plus outside work, taught in conjunction with the required introductory composition courses (Comp 126, Comp 150 or ILP) and other freshman learning clusters.

Competencies: Pre-research Level Resource Awareness

  1. Orientation to the library and its collections in the context of college work.
  2. Awareness of specific library services and research tools.
  3. Initial ability to evaluate the relative value of types of information. Introduction to the differences in information needs and communication standards.

Assessment:

Students will complete an online tutorial, which will be included in course syllabi. Students will demonstrate an understanding of what resources are available for academic work through the library.

Syllabus:

A joint working group of Library and Writing Program faculty have approved the following language to be incorporated into all comp syllabi beginning Fall 2009:

One important aspect of writing college-level papers is learning how to do research. Becoming a good researcher is an ongoing process that involves developing critical thinking skills, knowing where to look for appropriate sources, and being able to evaluate the information you find. To help you develop these skills, a librarian will be visiting class to:

  • Orient you to the library and its collections in the context of college work

  • Introduce you to specific library services and research tools, including general periodical databases

  • Help you develop database-specific search strategies

  • Introduce the process of determining the relative value of information sources

  • Demonstrate appropriate use of sources, including an awareness of proper citation styles and the issues surrounding academic honesty (unless covered by course instructor)

Online Tutorial

Required work:

Outside of class, students must complete the interactive online tutorial. The tutorial emphasizes the library’s web site as a starting point for conducting college-level research, and covers how to search the library’s catalog and Prospector, how to access course reserves, where to go to find journal articles, where to access electronic reference sources, and how to get help.

Completion of the tutorial will count as one homework assignment. When the tutorial is completed, an online form opens which allows the students to submit their name and email to their instructor.

Library Session

Timing:

Whenever it most appropriately fits into the class syllabus. The session should be timed to occur just before students must complete an assignment that requires them to find outside sources.

A one-hour session takes place in the library. During this time, students will recieve a short tour of the library, complete an exercise, and learn the basics of accessing library databases.
