Overview

Library instruction given in comp courses is a general, basic instruction to research. It is likely students doing research in advanced classes throughout the curriculum will need additional instruction. We encourage you to request additional instruction sessions with your departmental liaison librarian.

Librarians can teach students:

  • how to find quality, discipline-specific materials in databases, the library catalog, online, and in print
  • how to cite sources
  • how to avoid plagiarism . . . and more!

Timing

Library instruction is most effective at or very near the time students will begin their research; students retain more of what they have been taught when they apply it immediately.

It can be difficult for us to have large numbers of requests during the first couple weeks of classes. When scheduling, please keep in mind the timing of your students' research and schedule instruction later in the semester when possible.

Requests must be made at least one week in advance. This will allow sufficient prep time to customize instruction to your class needs. Advanced warning is also necessary to reserve computer labs. Last-minute requests may not be able to be honored due to computer lab constraints.

Your planning and patience in scheduling library instruction is much appreciated.
