What is a primary source?

Primary sources are pieces of information created during the time period being studied. These pieces of information are evidence left behind or recorded in some way by people present during that time.

This means that a primary source can be almost any type of information; it is entirely dependent on what is being researched to define whether or not a source can be considered primary.

Some common examples of primary sources include correspondence, diaries, documents, interviews, photos, speeches, legal documents, treaties, art works, newspapers, radio and television programs.

Have you thought of searching in ...

  • Archives - both physical and digitized
  • Museums - if you cannot physically visit displays, explore the museum's website for digitized content. Also, if there is contact information for experts working on displays, reach out to them for advice on where to access sources.
  • Secondary sources - it is common for authors to have translations and scanned images of primary sources contained within their secondary sources.
