Author format

Authors in Chicago Format

List first author with the last name first

         Examples: Smith, John D.

  • Smith, John David.

Multiple authors are separated by and

       Example: Smith, John D., and Rosemary L. Jones.

       Example: Smith, John D., Kathy Fish, and Rosemary L. Jones.

  • Only the first author's name is inverted. Remaining authors are formatted normally
  • List all the authors, in the list of references.
  • For a work with two or three authors, give all authors’ names in both the note and the bibliography entry. For a work with four or more authors, in the note give the first author’s name followed by “et al.” (for “and others”); in the bibliography entry, list all authors’ names.
  • Authors that are organizations, corporations, government entities, etc.

  • Do not invert or use abbreviations.
    • Examples:
      • United States Department of Commerce.
      • General Motors Corporation.
      • American Civil Liberties Union.

Editor format

Editors in Chicago format

If an entire edited book with authored chapters is cited, the editor is listed as the author with the abbreviation "ed." after their name, or "eds." if there are more than one editor. Multiple editors are formatted the same way as authors.

  • List first editor with the last name first, followed by a comma and "ed."
    • Example: Smith, John D., ed.
  • Multiple editors are separated by the word and and are followed with a comma and "eds."
    • Example: Smith, John D., and Rosemary L. Jones, eds.
    • Example: Smith, John D., Rosemary L. Jones, and Steven G. Harper, eds.
  • Only the first editor's name is inverted. Second and third authors are formatted normally

Publisher format

As stated in the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed.), "The publisher's name may be given either in full (e.g., as printed on the title page of the book) or in a somewhat abbreviated form." "In notes and bibliography, an initial The is omitted from a publisher's name, as are such abbreviations as Inc,. Ltd., or S.A. following a name. Co., & Co., Publishing Co., and the like are also omitted"
