Citation Guide Old: Author/Editor format

Author format

Authors are formatted the same in all material formats.

  • List first author with the last name first
    • Examples: Smith, JD.
  • Two authors are separated by a comma after the first author.
    • Example: Smith, JD, Jones, RL.
  • List up to 10 authors
    • Example: Smith, JD, Jones, RL, Harper, SG.
  • More than 10 authors, use the first 10 and et al.
    • Example: Pizzi C, Caraglia M, Cianciulli M, Fabbrocini A, Libroia A, Matano E, Contegiacomo A, Del Prete S, Abbruzzese A, Martignetti A, et al.

Authors that are organizations, corporations, government entities, etc.

  • Use abbreviations then spell out organization's name
    • Examples:
      • [USDC] United States Department of Commerce.
      • [GM] General Motors Corporation.
      • [ACLU] American Civil Liberties Union.

Editor format

If an entire edited book without authored chapters is cited, the editor is listed as the author with the abbreviation "ed." after their name, or "eds." if there are more than one editor. Multiple editors are formatted the same way as authors.

  • List first editor with the last name first, followed by a comma and "editor"
    • Example: Smith, JD, editor.
  • Two editors are separated by a comma after the first editor and followed with a comma and "editors."
    • Example: Smith, JD, Jones, RL, editors.
