Once you've installed Mendeley Cite, you will see it in your Word documents under the Ribbon tab called References. Activating Mendeley Cite will bring up a navigation pane on the right side of your Word documents and you will have access to all of the citations that you've stored in your Mendeley library. You will easily be able to insert in-text citations as you are writing your document, as well as create a bibliography in whatever citation style you need.
Once the plugin has been installed, you can open up your word processor. The tool will appear in a different location depending on the software you’re using. If you can’t see the toolbar, or if you remove it by accident, you can restore it via the ‘View’ menu and selecting the ‘Mendeley’ option from the ‘Toolbars’ list.
In Microsoft Word for Windows, the tool can be accessed via the References tab on the Ribbon.
1. Open the References tab on MS Word's "Tools" ribbon.
2. Position the cursor where you want to insert your first citation.
3. Press the Mendeley Cite button on the toolbar.
4. The Mendeley Citation Editor popup will appear, allowing you to search your Mendeley library for the appropriate reference. Enter a search term and choose the desired citation from the list of results.
5. Click Save Changes to insert the citation.
Your citations will be inserted according to the active ‘Citation Style’. Styles are formatting rules set out by journals and publishers. In some cases the citation may contain details about the cited source, while other publications may only use a footnote number. The appearance of your citations is controlled by the Citation Style you currently have selected. They can be modified at any time using the ‘Citation Style’ option on the plugin toolbar. This will open an interface allowing you to select from a list of common styles. If the style you need isn’t listed, you can use the ‘Get More Styles’ tab to install it.
Once you’ve inserted all the citations you require, you can use Mendeley Cite to automatically create a bibliography of all the materials you’ve cited. Position the cursor where you want the bibliography to appear and click on Mendeley Cite, press the ‘Insert Bibliography’ button under the "More" dropdown on the plugin toolbar. Depending on the number of citations in the document, this process may take a few seconds to complete.
Mendeley Cite will create an index of all the materials you’ve referenced and style the list according to the Citation Style you have active. Your bibliography will also reorder and restructure itself every time you add an additional citation - there's no need to completely rebuild it. Mendeley Cite will also automatically renumber the items if you insert a new citation earlier in the document.
1. Select the "References" menu in the MS Word tools ribbon.
2. Click on the Mendeley Cite tool
3. In the "More" dropdown menu, select "Insert Bibliography".
4. Click on the OK button and your bibliography will appear at the cursor location in your document. At this point you can make changes to the font type and size, etc.
