Import EndNote into Mendeley

When you install Mendeley Desktop App you will see options for importing from other citation managers, including EndNote.

To import your library from EndNote basic, you need to first download a free 30 day trial of EndNote desktop:

  1. Go to myendnoteweb.com. If you are already logged into EndNote, click on your profile in the top right corner, then Sign out.
  2. Click the Download button, enter the information requested, and click on Submit.
  3. You will receive an email with download instruction, including a link to download for Mac or Windows.
  4. Open the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install EndNote X9.
  5. When asked to Select Installation, choose I would like a 30-day free trial.
  6. Continue with installation

Syncing EndNote desktop and EndNote basic:

  1. Open EndNote desktop
  2. You will be prompted to Set up your account. Click on the button.
  3. To sync, click on the Enable Sync button and enter your EndNote basic credentials.
  4. Then click on Apply
  5. Under File, click on New... to create a new library
  6. Under Tools, click on Sync. Your files from EndNote basic should appear in this new library

Exporting EndNote library to Mendeley

  1. Under File, click on Export
  2. Set the Save as type to XML
  3. Open the drop-down menu for Output style and choose Select Another Style...
  4. Type in RefMan in the Quick Search box and hit enter. Double click on RefMan (RIS) Export to select it
  5. Choose a location to save your library (desktop should work fine)
  6. Click Save
  7. Open Mendeley online
  8. Click on Add, then Import RIS
  9. Choose the file you saved from EndNote and click Open. 
  10. Your EndNote citations will appear in your library under All Documents. Be sure to sync your library the next time you use Mendeley Desktop.
