Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the major professional body and publisher in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science. Their style manual is widely used in those disciplines. It uses a numbered reference list.

The three main parts of a reference are as follows:

  •  Author’s name listed as first initial of first name, then full last name.
  • Title of article, patent, conference paper, etc., in quotation marks.
  • Title of journal or book in italics.

The basic format of a reference:

[1]  A. B. Author, “Name of paper,” Abbrev. Title of Periodical, vol. x, no. x, pp. xxx-xxx, Abbrev. Month, year.

The bracketed number refers to the order in which the reference appears in the publication. All punctuation, dates, and page numbers depend on the type of reference cited.
